We keep one of the broadest drinks shelves in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For vermentino wines that means not three or four choices but 11.
Vermentino is the classic wine with fish and shellfish and is still less well known than sauvignon blanc. We keep it because it almost always works at the table.

The grape is found in Sardinia, in Liguria and in Tuscany, and on the French side of the Mediterranean, where it is called rolle. In Provence it goes into white wine and into some rosés.
In the glass you will recognise citrus, green apple, some herbs and often a slight bitterness in the finish. That is a characteristic of the grape, not a fault. Some wines have a salty note that suits the coast they come from.
Serve it cold, around eight degrees, with fish, shellfish, pesto and dishes with olive oil and lemon. Drink it young; Vermentino is rarely a wine to keep.
