Why you find red wines here
We keep one of the widest drinks ranges in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For red wines that means not three or four choices but 411.
With us, red is not a row of ten bottles but a shelf where you can search by country, grape and price. That makes it possible to truly compare instead of guessing.
Not sure which one you need? Call 0570 541 278 or email info@bockje.nl. Tell us what you normally drink, and we will work it out together.
About red wine
Red wine owes its colour to the grape skin. The juice of most blue grapes is in fact greenish white; the red pigments, the anthocyanins, are in the skin. That is why the grapes for red wine ferment together with their skins. Pressing only takes place towards or after the end of fermentation.
During that contact, colour, tannins and flavour compounds pass from the skins into the wine. The winemaker steers the result with, among other things, the length of skin contact and the fermentation temperature. A cooler fermentation usually produces a fruity red wine that is drunk young, a warmer fermentation a wine with more tannin that can age for longer.
The grape also decides a lot. Pinot Noir, the grape of Burgundy, has a thin skin and gives light-coloured wines with little tannin. Merlot has medium tannins and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, with Merlot contributing softness and body.
The difference between a light, fruity wine and a full-bodied red wine lies in the body: the feeling in the mouth, determined by alcohol, extract and tannin. When choosing a bottle of red wine, it helps to keep to this division into light, medium and full.

The colour does not come from the juice but from the skin: with red wine the juice stays on the skins during fermentation. The longer that lasts, the darker and sturdier the wine.
Two questions usually lead you to the right bottle. Do you want it light and fresh or full and robust? And are you eating something with it? With light dishes a pinot noir or gamay fits, with robust meat a malbec, syrah or cabernet.
Wood makes a wine rounder and adds vanilla and toast. If the label says barrique or reserva, the chance is high that you are heading in that direction.
