We keep one of the widest drinks selections in the Netherlands, in a family business at the Brink in Bathmen. For sparkling wines, that means not three or four choices but 81.

The price of bubbles often says more about the method than about the quality. With a wide shelf you can choose for yourself what you want to pay for it.

With bottle fermentation the wine ferments a second time in the bottle in which it is also sold. That takes time and handwork and gives fine bubbles with bread and brioche notes. Cava and crémant work this way.

With tank fermentation, the second fermentation takes place in a large tank. That is faster and keeps the fruit fresh; prosecco is the best-known example.

With cava, pay attention to the order brut nature, brut, seco, semi-seco: here seco is in fact sweeter than brut.

How many sparkling wines does ’t Bockje have?

What is the difference between prosecco and champagne?

Different grapes, a different region and a different method. Prosecco ferments in a tank and stays fresh and fruity; champagne ferments in the bottle and so gains bread and brioche notes. Champagne may only be called that if it comes from Champagne.
