We keep one of the widest drinks ranges in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For grenaches that means not three or four choices but 72.
Grenache is above all a blending grape: it is in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in Rioja and in countless wines from southern France and Spain. This list shows them all, even when the grape is not the first on the label.

The grape almost certainly comes from Aragón in northern Spain and spread across the Mediterranean. It loves heat and drought, and therefore easily reaches high ripeness.
In the glass you will recognise strawberry, cherry, herbs and sometimes a touch of liquorice or thyme. The colour is often lighter than you would expect from a sturdy wine, and the tannin is soft. The body comes more from ripeness than from structure.
Besides red, grenache also makes rosé, including in Tavel and Navarra, and fortified wine in Banyuls and Maury. Old vines yield concentrated wine; the label then says vieilles vignes or viñas viejas.

Why is garnacha sometimes missing from the label?
Because many classic regions sell under the name of the region and not under the name of the grape. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja or Côtes du Rhône there is often a lot of grenache without the grape being named. If the grape is mentioned, you will find the bottle in this list.
