What makes whisky Japanese?
Since 1 April 2021, an agreement of the industry association has applied in Japan: Japanese whisky is distilled in Japan, matures for at least three years in Japan in casks of no more than 700 litres, and is bottled in Japan at a minimum of 40 percent. It is not a law, but an agreement between the producers themselves.
Before that, bought-in foreign distillate could also be sold as Japanese whisky, and old labels were allowed to stay on until 31 March 2024. With an older bottle, you therefore look at the distillery on the label.
