Dark is not a protected style but a colour description. The colour comes from roasted malt, sometimes supplemented with candi sugar.
In practice you will find oud bruin, dubbels, bock beers and dark winter beers here.
Do not serve dark beer too cold: at around ten degrees the caramel and fruit notes come through best.

Is dark beer stronger than blond?
Not necessarily. Colour says nothing about the alcohol percentage: there are dark beers of 4 per cent and blond ones of 9. The colour comes from the malt, the strength from the sugar content before fermentation.
