Why you will find sour beers here
We keep one of the widest drinks ranges in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For sour beers, that means not three or four choices but 17.
Sour beer is a corner of the shelf you rarely see complete side by side. We put the old Belgian school and the new work together, so you can taste the difference instead of reading about it.
Not sure which one you need? Call 0570 541 278 or email info@bockje.nl. Tell us what you normally drink, and we will work it out together.

Ordinary beer is fermented by a yeast the brewer adds himself. With sour beer, wild yeasts and lactic acid bacteria take over the work. That produces acidity rather than just alcohol, and with it a beer that is more reminiscent of cider or white wine than of pilsner.
The oldest form is lambic from the Senne valley near Brussels: the wort stands open overnight in a coolship, catches whatever is in the air and then matures for years in oak casks. A gueuze is a blend of young and old lambic that referments in the bottle. If sour cherries or raspberries are added, it is called kriek or framboise. Faro is lambic with candi sugar.
Then there is the Flemish school: red-brown from West Flanders and oud bruin from East Flanders, matured in large wooden casks and then blended with young beer. German beers work differently: Berliner Weisse and Gose are light, salty or spicy and quickly ready.
The new approach is called kettle sour. The brewer lets lactic acid bacteria do their work in the brew kettle for a day, then boils and continues brewing. It takes weeks instead of years, and so it is found at brewers who have no barrel cellar.
Serve sour beer cool, around six to eight degrees, in a tulip glass or a goblet. An Oude Geuze can also be a little less cold; that brings out the wood. Sour beer goes well with fat and salt: with a mature cheese, with mussels, or with a stew that the beer itself went into.

Frequently asked questions
How many sour beers does ’t Bockje have?
17 different ones, from 10 breweries. The current price and stock are shown in the online shop.
What is the difference between gueuze and lambic?
Lambic is the base beer: spontaneously fermented and aged for years in casks, flat and without foam. Gueuze is a blend of young and old lambic that re-ferments in the bottle, giving it carbonation and foam. Oude geuze is a protected designation for a gueuze made only from lambic, without added sweetener.
Is sour beer something for people who do not normally drink beer?
Often yes. If you are not after bitterness, a kriek or a Flemish red-brown leads you to fruit and acidity rather than hops. Start with a fruitier bottle and move on from there to an oude geuze; that is a good deal drier.
What do sour beers cost?
With us from € 1.39 to € 115.00. Prices are subject to change; the price in the webshop is the current price.
